2023 ODI World Cup: Rohit Sharma takes the initiative as India destroys Afghanistan by eight wickets

India’s skipper, Rohit Sharma, put on a record-breaking batting masterclass to lead his side to a decisive eight-wicket win against Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2023 match played in Delhi.

Afghanistan, who opted to bat, amassed a respectable 272 for eight. Hasmatullah Shahidi’s tenacious 80 and the youthful Azmatullah Omarazai’s fearless 62 laid the groundwork for their innings.

However, Rohit Sharma’s brilliant batting helped India respond. It is impossible to describe Rohit’s 131 runs from only 84 balls as anything other than a cricketing masterpiece. In only 63 balls, Rohit scored his record-breaking seventh century in World Cup games. His outstanding performance allowed India to reach the 273-run mark in only 35 overs, greatly raising their net run rate before their eagerly awaited World Cup match against Pakistan on October 14.

As Rohit strode down the track to unleash a flat six over wide long-off in the fifth over, he reached 1000 World Cup runs and immediately demonstrated his aggressive intent. Notably, it was the quickest hundred ever scored by an Indian in a 50-over World Cup.

Ishan Kishan, who got 47 runs off of 47 balls and watched Rohit’s brilliance from the non-striker’s end, provided Rohit with excellent assistance throughout his innings.

Rohit Sharma captivated the Feroz Shah Kotla audience with his six-hitting power and graceful strokeplay. With a total of 16 boundaries and five sixes, he completely dominated the Afghan bowlers and was in top form.

With Kishan and Rohit’s wickets falling to Rashid Khan, the only Afghan bowler to have any significant effect, India easily won the match by scoring 154 runs in only 18 overs.

India won easily because to Rohit Sharma’s outstanding century and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 55 from 56 deliveries. The sportsmanship and respect shown by Kohli and Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq throughout the chase was a good message for the cricketing community.

Thanks to Shahidi and Omarzai’s 121-run partnership earlier in the game, Afghanistan had shown a substantial improvement in their batting prowess compared to their tournament debut against Bangladesh.

India’s bowlers, headed by Jasprit Bumrah, responded well by limiting Afghanistan to a difficult but reachable score. Bumrah was the star bowler, with his best World Cup game stats of 4 for 39.

Overall, the match was exciting and showed off the best of cricket, and Rohit Sharma’s record-breaking century will go down as one of the tournament’s high points.
