Arhar Dal Costs Rs 136 Per Kg, An Increase Of 32% From Previous Year

The largest dal (lentils) manufacturer is said to be India. However, the cost of toor dal, also known as arhar dal, which is extremely prevalent in every home, has increased quickly. According to reports, the price increase of arhar dal would eventually cause the cost of all other dals to rise as well. The average man is facing a lot of difficulties as a result of the increase in the cost of the dals that are often eaten at home. Prior to this, tomato prices had already risen dramatically, negatively affecting average families.

Reports state that as of July 16, the price of dal was reported to be Rs 136.29 per kg, or 32% higher than it was the previous year, when it was Rs 103.03 per kg. Additionally, it was discovered that toor dal costs had grown by 7% in only one month. Toor dal cost Rs 127.37 per kg a month ago; this is an increase of over Rs 9 in only one month.

The seeding of these pulses has reportedly been delayed as a result of the delayed monsoon. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, up to July 9 there was roughly 25.8% less acreage planted with pulses than the previous year. Due to the unusually heavy rainfall in Maharashtra and Karnataka in October, it is anticipated that the output of arhar dal would be reduced during these months. This has affected every stage of the pulses’ growth cycle. Moong dal and urad dal prices have grown as a result of food inflation.

The Indian government has lifted the 40% purchase cap for arhar, urad, and toor dals under the Price Support Scheme operations for 2023–2024 in order to enhance the production of pulses.

The government has maintained the custom duty on urad dal at 0% and for arhar dal at 10% for FY 2023–2024. The administration also permitted the free import of arhar dal earlier in 2021, which is still going on today. However, despite their efforts, they are still having trouble keeping these dals’ growing costs under control.
