Cybercrimes: DoT orders telecom companies to check 20 lakh connections and disable 28,200 cell phones

Delhi, New: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said on Friday that it has instructed telecom service providers (TSPs) to ban 28,200 mobile phones and re-verify the 20 lakh related mobile connections in an attempt to shield residents from online threats.

To stop the abuse of telecom resources in financial fraud and cybercrime, the DoT, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and state police have teamed up.

The Department of Technology stated in a statement that “this cooperative effort aims to dismantle networks of fraudsters and protect citizens from digital threats.”

According to an examination conducted by the MHA and state police, 28,200 mobile phones were improperly utilized in a number of cybercrimes. Additionally, these mobile phones were utilized in an astounding 20 lakh numbers.

The Department of Technology then directed TSPs to re-verify 20 lakh mobile connections “linked to these mobile handsets and disconnect failing re-verification, in addition to blocking 28,200 mobile phones.

Following a user’s allegations of cyber fraud via its website, “Chakshu,” the DoT terminated a mobile number and blacklisted at least 20 associated mobile devices earlier this week.

A citizen-friendly internet program called Chakshu makes it easier for people to report suspected fraud.

“The unified approach demonstrates a shared commitment towards public safety and to safeguard the integrity of telecommunications infrastructure and ensure a secure digital environment,” said the Department of Transportation.
