Telecom Bill will pave way for industry restructuring, and innovation: Ashwini Vaishnav

New Delhi. The new Telecom Bill will pave a clear path for restructuring the industry and promoting innovation. Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said this on Thursday. He said at an event of the 'Public Affairs Forum of India' that in the next one-and-a-half to two years, the government will revamp the entire digital regulatory framework. It aims to strike a balance between social objectives, duties, and rights of individuals, technology infrastructure, etc.

Vaishnav said, “Industry passes through different phases. Sometimes due to business environment, technology change, and various other factors. Hence there is a need for restructuring. How to include this in the Bill, so that the industry gets a very clear path? “These things have to be kept in mind for the reorganization. These are the things which are my right. That's why such a clear framework has been given in the Bill."

"It doesn't mean that we just roam around and copy whatever is best in the world. This means that we aim to create a digital legal framework that the world must study. It is a huge goal, but it is possible." According to the draft Telecom Bill-2022, 'over-the-top' apps like WhatsApp, Zoom, and Google Duo, which provide calling and messaging services, will be allowed in the country. A license may be required to operate.
