The mobile subscriber base of telcos declined by 3.6 million in September: TRAI

The total number of mobile customers of telecom companies in the country has decreased by 36 lakh during September this year. Vodafone Idea's subscriber base declined while Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel added new customers in September as compared to August, according to the latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The country's largest telecom company Reliance Jio further strengthened its position in the market by adding 7.2 lakh subscribers during September. There has also been an increase of 4.12 lakh in the number of connections of Bharti Airtel. Jio added 32.81 lakh, new customers, in August, which is much higher than in September. At the same time, Vodafone Idea's subscriber base declined by 40 lakh to 24.91 crores during September.

Releasing the September figures, TRAI said, “At the end of August 2022, the number of mobile customers of telecom companies was 114.91 crore. It decreased by 0.32 percent to 114.54 crores at the end of September. Overall, the number of telephone subscribers in India (mobile and fixed-line together) decreased to about 117.19 crores at the end of September 2022. It has declined by 0.27 percent on a monthly basis. TRAI said that at the end of September 2022, the total number of broadband subscribers has increased by 0.28 percent to 816 million as compared to August.
