Who is OpenAI’s new temporary CEO, Emmett Shear?

Sam Altman was abruptly fired as CEO of OpenAI, and after hours of talks, the board of the firm chose to take a new approach and choose former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear as temporary CEO.

The Information claims that Altman will not be taking over as CEO of OpenAI.

Shear will take over as temporary CEO, according to Ilya Sutskever, a board director and co-founder of OpenAI.

Shear will take over as CEO from Mira Murati, who had openly supported Altman.

Murati fired her only a few hours after inviting Altman to meet with OpenAI officials on Sunday at the company’s headquarters in San Francisco.

Up until March of this year, Shear, a co-founder of Justin.tv and Twitch, served as the platform’s CEO. He graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in 2005.

In June 2011, Shear became a part-time partner at Y Combinator, where he provides guidance to incoming entrepreneurs in each round. In 2012, he was included as one of Forbes Magazine’s 30 Under 30.

Shear and Justin Kan introduced Kiko Calendar, an online Ajax calendar application, in 2005. They found obstacles in their business effort, such as competition from Google Calendar, so they decided to sell it on eBay.

Shear’s hire seems to put an end to Altman’s situation, since the board dismissed him on Friday for not being “consistently candid in his communications.”
