Because OF THIS, Akshay Kumar Refused To Play God In OMG

In his 2012 film OMG – Oh My God!, director Umesh Shukla said that Akshay Kumar was reluctant to play the part of Lord Krishna. As a result of Amitabh Bachchan’s underwhelming portrayal as God in God Tussi Great Ho (2008), Akshay at first had his reservations. Aankh Micholi, a movie directed by Umesh and starring Abhimanyu Dassani, Paresh Rawal, Mrunal Thakur, Divya Dutta, Vijay Raaz, Abhishek Banerjee, and Sharman Joshi, is now under promotion.

In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Umesh recalled how he first contacted Akshay Kumar about playing Krishna in OMG. He said, “When we informed Akshay bhai about this, originally he had that feeling. “How will I play God’s character? This is a God.” He was unsure of himself at the moment since a different movie with Bachchan sir playing a God had just come out, but it had not quite worked. In light of Bachchan Sir’s inability to portray God, he (Akshay) wondered how he would play the role. It was like this for him. But he finally understood when he saw the play (Kanji Virudh Kanji, a play by Umesh Shukla that served as the basis for the movie). The character (in Akshay’s part) has a lot of depth. So he did so quickly.

In the 2008 film God Tussi Great Ho, which also featured Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra, Amitabh Bachchan played the role of God. The movie, which was directed by Rumi Jaffery, also starred Beena Kak and Anupam Kher. Unfortunately, God Tussi Great Ho was one of the worst disappointments of that year since it underperformed at the box office.

When asked whether he had any reservations about writing a character that represented God, Umesh said, “No, I didn’t understand it (when filming the movie). I had previously performed the play. My assignment was completed. I had seen the play’s actual reaction. In the experiment, the audience consisted of those who purchased tickets for $50 and others who purchased seats for $500 or even $700. All of those folks had the same response, as far as I could tell. I was thus not very skeptical. Naturally, I was doubtful while I was writing it. The character was being developed at the time.

There were rumors that Umesh had a notion for OMG 2 and was in talks with the producers a few years ago. The talks, however, fell through, and Amit Rai created the sequel that was made public earlier this year. He disputed the assertions by saying, “No, no, no. I was composing another script at the time. That is why it never happened. And OMG 2 is another excellent movie. Very impressive. Additionally, the film’s creator, Amit (director Amit Rai), is a personal friend. He produced a fantastic movie. The characters had already arrived and were situated. Then, what was the best course of action? (Find a solid screenplay starring those people) And he (Amit) had a great script. And it was successful.
