During the Saawariya shoot, Ranbir Kapoor claimed that Bhansali “tortured” him, saying, “He was beating me.”

In the 2007 film Saawariya, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ranbir Kapoor made his screen debut. Even though the movie hasn’t been in theaters for about eighteen years, the actor was mentioned in an old interview that just made a reappearance on Reddit on his collaboration with Bhansali. Ranbir said that he was “tortured” during the filming of Saawariya and that the director had beaten him up in the past.

“On set, I was kneeling down and he was beating me because he was a hard task master,”It became so heavy at one point, and I was so distressed that I had to stop watching the movie.I believe I am too emotional and sensitive, and after getting to know me so well, he sort of continued probing into that. I guess it was around ten or eleven months into my employment when I said, “Listen, I can’t do this; it’s getting to me.” Ranbir said, “I thought he went crazy because he got too much,” during an appearance on Neha Dhupia’s podcast No Filter Neha in 2016.

Having said that, I believe that every acting role I do in movies originates from that encounter with him; in that way, he was a real teacher. The actor said, “He taught me everything there is to acting, from emotions to that kind of things.

It goes beyond Ranbir Kapoor’s Bollywood debut in Saawariya. Sonam Kapoor, the daughter of Anil Kapoor, made her acting debut in the movie as well.

In the meantime, Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Leela Bhansali will soon collaborate once again. The actor is set to star in the movie Love and War. The film, which also stars Vicky Kaushal and Alia Bhatt in key roles, was revealed in January of this year. News18 Showsha just found out that the movie is scheduled to begin production in November of this year.

“Love and War will start filming in Mumbai, although a set has not yet been built for the film. There will be several intricate song scenes in the movie, and Bhansali is now in talks with his production design team about them. Regarding Vicky, it is still unknown when he will join the filming, an insider from the production informed us.

On Christmas of 2025, Love and War is expected to open in theaters.
