Dutt's casting in the next Tamil film was confirmed by production company 7 Screen Studio on Twitter. "We are honoured to welcome @duttsanjay sir to Tamil Cinema and we are delighted to announce that he is a part of #Thalapathy67," the production company said in a tweet announcing the news. "When I heard the one-liner of Thalapathy 67, I knew at that precise instant I had to be part of the film and I am happy to start this adventure," Sanjay Dutt reportedly said in a statement to reporter. 

Sanjay Dutt made his cinematic debut in Kannada with KGF Chapter 2 last year. The project has started in production as of this month. Co-producing The Thalapathy 67 with S. S. Lalit Kumar is Jagadish Palanisamy.

The details of the film's storyline are being withheld. The film may, however, be a part of Kanagaraj's "Lokesh Cinematic Universe," which also includes the Kamal Haasan- and Karthi-starring films Kaithi and Vikram.
