In The Past 35 Days, A New Symphony Was Composed: Ilaiyaraaja Amid Coolie Copyright Issues

Widespread attention was generated when singer SP Balasubrahmanyam was sued by music composer Ilaiyaraaja in 2017 for using his tunes without permission while on a global tour. It seems that the artist is still aiming for some degree of control over his work, seven years later. He recently issued a copyright notification, demonstrating his continued attempts to safeguard his musical compositions, to the makers of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Rajinikanth-starring film Coolie. Without getting permission from Ilaiyaraaja, the creators of Coolie used the song Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa from the 1983 movie Thanga Magan in a promotional video.

To make his point clear, Ilaiyaraaja gave the Coolie producers a deadline: either they could get permission for the song Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa or they could take it out of the teaser for the film. The notification issued a harsh warning, threatening the producers with serious legal repercussions if these criteria were not fulfilled.

As talks over Ilaiyaraaja’s copyright concerns continue, a number of films representing different points of view are making the rounds on the internet. In an effort to shed light on the controversy, Ilaiyaraaja has taken the initiative to make a video in which he addresses his supporters. He acknowledged that there are several videos online featuring him. “I don’t pay attention to any of this,” he continued. In the midst of all this, Ilaiyaraaja said that he has also been writing a new symphony for the last 35 days. On social media, people are starting to watch this film more and more.

The composer acknowledged in a video posted on X (previously Twitter) that he is aware of the many videos that are going viral about him on social media, but he made it clear that he doesn’t allow them to divert him. “I am steadfast in my chosen path,” he said. In between all of your best wishes, I’ve kept writing movie soundtracks, attended events, and created a four-movement symphony. He was happy to provide his followers with this encouraging news.

In light of his friendship with Ilaiyaaraja, Rajinikanth was recently questioned about the matter as well. In response, Rajinikanth said that he had no influence over the subject since it was between the film’s producer and the musical prodigy.

The movie Coolie’s title was revealed in April via promotional materials issued by Sun Pictures. These advertising materials included a number of homages to the legendary Rajinikanth, including an updated rendition of a key song from his 1983 movie Thangamagan.
