He is currently preparing for another intense drama. The writer-director intends to make a film based on the intensely publicized Shah Bano Begum legal case.
For those who are unaware, the Shah Bano Begum vs. Mohd. Ahmad Khan case—also referred to as the Shah Bano Begum case—is seen as a significant turning point in India’s post-independence history. Shah Bano, then 62 years old, filed it in 1978 after her divorce from Mohd. Ahmad Khan. She requested support under Section 123 of the 1973 Code of Criminal Procedure for herself and her five children. When Shah Bano prevailed in the lawsuit, there was a stir because some people thought the ruling went against Islamic law. More than 40 years after the ruling was rendered, it sparked a debate in India over whether various faiths should have separate civil laws.
After completing the screenplay, Suparn S. Varma is now working on assembling a memorable cast and team. Rumor has it that a National Award-winning filmmaker will be involved in this project, although the creators have not confirmed this.
