In an interview with India.com, Dr. Brundavani, a nutritionist and consultant at Rainbow Children’s Hospital in Hyderabad, outlined the nutrients you should include in your child’s diet.

A Balanced Diet is Important for Children with TB
A healthy, balanced diet is essential for avoiding tuberculosis in children. A broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients necessary for a robust immune system may be found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, and dairy products. Depending on their age, babies and kids need different amounts of protein.

For infants aged 0 to 6 months, the daily need for protein is around 1.5 grammes per kilogramme (kg) of body weight. For infants aged seven to twelve months, this rises to three grammes of protein per kilogramme of ideal body weight per day. Toddlers (ages one to three) need somewhat more protein each day, consuming 3 to 4 grammes per kilogramme of ideal body weight. Every day, children aged 4 to 13 need around 1.5 grammes of protein per kilogramme of ideal body weight.

Vitamins For Children

Proteins: Essential for tissue development, healing, and the maintenance of healthy muscles, proteins are the basic building blocks of life. Making sure kids get adequate protein from foods like fish, poultry, eggs, lentils, nut butter, dairy, tofu, etc. is essential.

Good Fats: Good fats provide energy and essential fatty acids required for a balanced immunological response. Foods high in these fats include avocados, dry fruits, seeds, and olive oil.

D-vitamine
The “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D, is necessary for healthy immune system operation. Children’s defences against TB will be greatly strengthened by vitamin D-rich foods such as fortified milk, salmon, and eggs, as well as by encouraging them to spend time in the early morning sun.

Vitamin C
The antioxidant properties of vitamin C are widely recognised for shielding cells from damage and boosting the body’s resistance to infection. Broccoli, bell peppers, strawberries, and citrus fruits are all excellent providers of this potent vitamin that kids should eat. Up to two million sailors are said to have perished from scurvy, a vitamin C deficiency illness, between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Thus, vitamin C plays a critical role in avoiding not just tuberculosis but also several other deadly illnesses, including scurvy.

Probiotics and zinc: Maintaining the health of your immune system depends on zinc. Lean meats, nuts, and whole grains are among the foods high in zinc that should often be served to children as part of their meals to ensure that they get this essential mineral in order to fight TB.”Good” bacteria, or probiotics, are crucial for gut health, which is closely related to immunity in general. Children’s diets that include milk, curd, and fermented foods may help to maintain a healthy gut, providing an additional line of defence against TB.

A thorough plan is necessary to prevent TB in youngsters. This entails giving them a balanced diet to boost their immunity, teaching them correct cleanliness, making sure their living spaces have enough air, and following the recommended immunisation schedule. When combined, these actions provide a strong barrier against tuberculosis and advance the health and welfare of our children.
