A candidate from India was elected to the UNIDROIT Governing Council

Rome: Thirty-two candidates, including those from the US, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and France, competed for a seat on the governing council of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), with Uma Sekhar of India emerging victorious, according to sources on Thursday.

An independent international organization, UNIDROIT studies the need and strategies for updating private and commercial laws, among other legal matters.

Officials characterized the Indian woman candidate’s win as “historic”.

“In a historic victory for India’s first woman candidate, Uma Sekhar was elected to the Governing Council of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) with an impressive 45 votes out of 59 votes in the first round at the elections held in Rome,” according to a source.

According to reports, 21 votes were needed to be elected to the Governing Council. India will serve as a member of the organization from 2024 to 2028.

Distinguished legal professionals have 25 posts on the Governing Council, they claimed.

“In today’s election, there were 32 contestants in the fray including from the US, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, France, etc,” according to the previous source.

“The candidates from Russia, the US, and China failed to win positions on the Governing Council,” according to a source.

UNIDROIT aims to investigate how states and groups of states’ private laws may be modernized, harmonized, and coordinated. It also develops standard legal instruments, principles, and regulations to accomplish these goals.
