Following a recent health crisis, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was discharged from the hospital

Following treatment for a bladder issue, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday. This is the Pentagon chief’s latest health worry, coming as he attempted to put the controversy over his management of post-prostate cancer surgery problems behind him.

The Defense Department released a statement stating that Austin, 70, “is recovering well and resumed his full duties and functions.” However, it said that “Secretary Austin will recover and perform his duties remotely from home for a period before returning to work at the Pentagon later this week, per the advice of his doctors.”

Austin was treated for “a bladder issue” that “was corrected with non-surgical procedures,” according to a statement from the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center.

What happened with the head of the Pentagon?
After receiving treatment for prostate cancer in late December, Austin had to stay in the hospital for two weeks in January due to surgical difficulties. His decision to delay notifying Congress and President Joe Biden about the diagnosis and hospitalization caused a stir.

Due to his most recent health setback, Austin had to postpone his journey to Brussels to meet with other chiefs of defense and delegated his responsibilities to his deputy.

After spending around two weeks in the hospital, Austin was finally discharged on January 15. Afterwards, he expressed regret for keeping the sickness secret and for not informing Biden of his cancer diagnosis for a few days. On January 29, he made his first appearance back at work at the Pentagon in over a month.

Congress was enraged by the secrecy and wanted answers from Austin. The Pentagon’s internal inspector said that it would look into whether the Defense Department’s protocols are enough to guarantee the right notifications and a handoff of power in the event that a top commander becomes unwell.
