Four American college professors traveling to China were attacked in a public park in Jilin

According to a school spokeswoman cited by CNN, four American professors from Iowa College who were visiting their partner institution in China were stabbed and assaulted in a public park, resulting in injuries.

“In a serious incident,” Cornell College President Jonathan Brand wrote in a message to the campus community, the teachers from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, who were hurt on Monday (local time) were in a public park with a faculty member of their partner university.

“We have been in contact with all four instructors and are assisting them during this time,” Brand said.

The stabbing incident occurred in Jilin City, and Beihua University is the partner institution, said to school spokesman Jen Visser, who talked with CNN.

A spokeswoman for the US State Department said that the agency is keeping an eye on the issue and is aware of reports of a stabbing incident in China.

The school said that none of the pupils were taking part in the program.

Governor Kim Reynolds of Iowa stated that he communicates with both the state department and the federal delegation in Iowa.

“In reaction to this horrific incident, I’m in contact with the state department and the federal delegation for Iowa. “Pray for their complete recuperation, safe journey back, and their loved ones back home,” he said.

Additionally, Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa said that her staff is “closely following reports that personnel from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon were stabbed in China.”

“We are prepared to help these Iowans even more and are in contact with the State Department and the college.” I’m hoping for a quick recovery for everyone,” she said on X.

The New York Times included a video that seemed to have been recorded after the incident and was shared on Chinese social media. It showed three persons laying on the ground with spectators around them. One was covered in blood, while another seemed as if he was pressing his wound with his hand. Every one of the three had their phone out.

In the 2022–2023 academic year, 1,074 students were enrolled at the private, four-year Cornell College, with a student–to–faculty ratio of 13:1.

That year, biochemistry, kinesiology, engineering, computer science, and politics were the most popular majors at the university. Students follow an 18-day academic cycle, taking one subject at a time at the institution.

In an effort to ease tensions in their relationship, China and the US have lately sought to strengthen their educational links. China’s premier leader, Xi Jinping, said in November of last year that over the course of five years, 50,000 young Americans will be extended an invitation to take part in study and exchange programs.

Due to an agricultural exchange, President Xi resided in Iowa in 1985 with a host family, giving him a personal link to the state.
