Hunter Biden enters a not-guilty plea for two minor tax infractions

Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, entered a “not guilty” plea after the agreement with federal prosecutors fell through in a Delaware court, according to The Washington Post. Hunter Biden had been expected to admit guilt to two minor tax offenses and escape prison time.

Hunter Biden previously reached an agreement with prosecutors to admit the two misdemeanors of failing to pay federal taxes on time in 2017 and 2018, keep the gun charge off his record, and avoid jail time — provided that he complies with all of the terms over a two-year period, according to The Washington Post, including refraining from drug use and refraining from purchasing a firearm. Hunter Biden said “no” on Wednesday when the federal court asked whether he would enter a guilty plea despite the possibility of more charges.

In the trial, the prosecution insisted that this had always been a part of the deal. Chris Clark, the attorney for Hunter Biden, said at them, “Then we misunderstood, we’re ripping it up.”
The court instructed the parties to revise the agreement’s framework and resubmit it once it could pass constitutional test after the collapse of divisional agreements, a pact between Hunter Biden and prosecutors, according to The Washington Post.

He could ultimately go on trial for the tax charges if his attorneys and the prosecution are unable to find a way to salvage the plea agreement. The document said that he may possibly be prosecuted for acquiring a weapon illegally.

Hunter Biden is being investigated by the Justice Department under the Trump administration since 2018. As the investigation has progressed, it has looked at whether his multimillion dollar international business transactions may have broken laws against money laundering and foreign lobbying.
