Muraleedharan, who is on a two-day official visit to the Maldives, described his trip as “highly productive” and received assurances that the two countries’ relationship will develop further.

“Today, Abdulla Shahid, the foreign minister, and I had some really interesting and useful chats. We covered a wide range of partnership-related subjects. We were pleased with our bilateral partnership’s quick overall development and tight collaboration on regional and global challenges, the minister added.

He said that under the leadership of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two countries’ ties had made significant strides in recent years.

The minister added in a news release that “along with our strong development partnership, India and the Maldives have been able to develop a deep and close cooperation at all levels, including political, administrative, entrepreneurial, and people-to-people ties.”

He emphasised that India has grown to be the main source of tourism for the Maldives and the top destination for Maldivians visiting abroad while claiming that India’s development cooperation portfolio in the Maldives has increased dramatically in recent years.

He stated that India has overtaken the Maldives as the island nation’s top economic partner in recent months and that the two countries have collaborated closely to address the issues posed by the Covid epidemic.

“Our all-inclusive development cooperation includes grants, special financing, spending help, capacity building, and training support. We are pleased to see a number of initiatives getting off the ground, being carried out, and helping individuals and the neighbourhood, he added.

The initiatives for water and sanitation in 34 Islands, he said, are now almost finished.

In Hulhumale, the construction of 4000 dwelling units is also going well, and several towers are anticipated to be constructed and delivered in the next months, the official said.

In order for Addu to become the Maldives’ southern regional centre, it is necessary to complete the Addu Development Project-Roads and Reclamation, according to the minister, who also noted that India is helping the Maldives in this endeavour.

The $500 million Greater Male Connectivity Project, which will significantly boost the Maldivian economy, is our flagship project in the Maldives. We are determined to hasten its implementation, he said.

According to the minister, the Hanimaadhoo international airport reconstruction project is moving forward quickly in terms of connectivity.

The Gulhifalhu Port Project, the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited Facility Expansion, and the Establishment of a Cancer Specialty Hospital in Laamu Atoll are among our other significant projects that are in different phases of development. The $ 40 million LoC initiatives for enhancing sports infrastructure are developing nicely, which is something else I’m delighted to highlight,” he said.

According to the minister, India’s grant projects are the only ones of their sort that help the neighbourhood. He noted the signing of 10 further agreements for the execution of the high-impact projects in 11 Atolls in the Maldives, saying, “We are already partnering on 45 such projects, of which 27 have already been completed.”

He sent a package of tuberculosis medications to the Maldives and expressed confidence that they would help the country’s effort to eradicate the illness. An “important pillar” of the two countries’ relations, according to him, is health cooperation.

“As Prime Minister Modi said, the collaboration between India and the Maldives not only serves the interests of its inhabitants but also serves as a catalyst for regional peace, stability, and development. Our goal is to advance the connection to greater heights, he said.

Additionally, he made a phone call to President Solih and spoke with him about enhancing bilateral relations. He delivered Prime Minister Modi’s greetings.

The minister said that “the tried-and-true partnership between India and the Maldives is poised to scale further new heights.”
