Adobe co-founder John Warnock passed away on Saturday at the age of 82, the firm said in a statement early on Sunday. He passed away, but the reason why was kept a secret.

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen said in an email to staff, “It is a sad day for the Adobe community and the industry for which he has been an inspiration for decades.

Shantanu Narayen, CEO of Adobe, reflected on their relationship and expressed his utmost appreciation for Warnock. “My interactions with John over the past 25 years have been the highlight of my professional career,” he said in a letter to the staff. Although he served as my mentor and role model, I am most appreciative to consider him as a friend.

Warnock and Charles Geschke started Adobe together in 1982. He left his role as CEO in 2000 and held the joint chairmanship of the board alongside Geschke until 2017. He retired from these responsibilities and continued to serve on the board of directors of the corporation until his demise. His business partner Geschke, who was 81 years old, died away in 2021.

Warnock and Geschke’s collaboration began while they were working together at Xerox Holdings Corp. Their ground-breaking item, PostScript, was instrumental in starting the desktop publishing revolution.

According to the company’s official biography, Warnock’s career before co-founding Adobe includes jobs as a senior scientist at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, as well as positions at Evans & Sutherland Computer, Computer Sciences Corp., IBM, and the University of Utah.

Warnock had an exceptional educational background, having graduated from the University of Utah with a PhD in electrical engineering, a master’s in mathematics, and a bachelor’s in both mathematics and philosophy. Warnock left behind a wife, Marva, and three children in his private life.
