Mexican mayoral candidate dies while on campaign trail

The most recent in a series of incidents in Mexico that have occurred in the lead-up to elections was the death of an aspirant mayor.

On Wednesday, at a campaign event, Alfredo Cabrera, a mayoral candidate in Coyuca de Benitez, in the southern state of Guerrero, Mexico, was shot.

Evelyn Salgado, the governor of Guerrero, denounced the “cowardly crime.”

Salgado posted on social networking site X that she had requested the state prosecutor’s office to “bring the full weight of the law against the person or persons responsible.”

According to the prosecution, they began looking into the murder. The claimed attacker was slain on the spot, they said.

Local media reports that since September, at least twenty candidates have died.

Mexico is scheduled to hold regional, legislative, and presidential elections on Sunday.
