Old Ways Can’t Handle New Situations Because the World Is Multipolar Jaishankar Informs Counterparts in BRICS

Speaking to BRICS colleagues in Cape Town on Thursday (local time), External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar emphasized the need of addressing the ‘international architecture”s flaws and modernizing organizations like the UN Security Council.

Jaishankar said that despite demands for reforming multilateral organizations, nothing has been done to enhance their condition. He claimed that conventional approaches cannot be used to solve contemporary problems.

The minister advised his BRICS peers that the alliance needed to represent transformation.

“Our assembly must convey a clear statement that the globe is multipolar, that it is rebalancing, and that outdated approaches will not work in the face of contemporary challenges. We must behave appropriately because we are a representation of change, Jaishankar was reported by the news agency ANI as adding.

In a report from ANI, he said that the group made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa must handle important current concerns seriously, constructively, and collaboratively.

“Friends, the current state of the world requires that the BRICS countries take collective, serious, and constructive approaches to some of the most pressing challenges of the day. In his opening comments at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ summit, Jaishankar stated, “The BRICS summit is an important event in our diplomatic calendar and more so at a time when the geopolitical situation is complex.

The aftermath of the COVID-19 epidemic, wars throughout the globe, and the economic hardship of the Global South, according to Jaishankar, demonstrate how the present international architecture has failed because it does not take into account contemporary politics, economics, demography, and ambitions.

BRICS countries were urged by Jaishankar to show seriousness in their efforts to change international decision-making organizations like the UN Security Council. “For two decades, we have heard calls for reform of multilateral institutions only to be continuously disappointed,” he added.

economically concentrated

According to Jaishankar, one of the main issues the world is presently facing is economic concentration, as too many countries are left at the mercy of too few in terms of production, resources, services, or communication.

“Recent events that have an effect on health, energy, and food security only served to emphasize this vulnerability. In order to bring these problems before the G20, India participated in the Voice of the Global South exercise. We urge BRICS to take it especially into account and to support the economic decentralization that is so crucial to political democratization, according to Jaishankar.

He also emphasized the fact that terrorism still poses a serious danger to world peace and security.

“All countries must firmly combat this threat, including its funding and propaganda. The foreign minister was reported by ANI as stating, “It must be combated in all its forms and expressions and never be tolerated under any circumstances.

Additionally, he said that the International Year of Millets, set for 2023 by the UN, intends to encourage the growing of nutrient-dense, climate-resilient grains, enhancing global food security.

Additionally, he requested that the BRICS countries embrace and approve India’s Lifestyle for Environment Initiative.

On the margins of the BRICS Ministerial in Cape Town, South Africa, Jaishankar met with both his South African colleague Naledi Pandor and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. From June 1 to June 6, 2023, he will be making an official trip to South Africa and Namibia.
