On the Russian-held side of the dam breach, eight people died and almost 6,000 were evacuated: Russian-backed Official

The massive Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine collapsed on Tuesday, killing eight people and forcing more than 5,800 people to flee their homes, according to a top Russian-appointed official who spoke on Friday.

Russian-appointed Kherson provincial governor Vladimir Saldo accused Ukraine of continuing to bomb rescuers on the Russian-controlled left side of the Dnipro River, which Russia alleges it has unilaterally seized.

Saldo said on Telegram that the water level in the village of Nova Kakhovka, which lies downstream from the dam, has decreased by 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) from its Tuesday high.www.theindiaprint.com on the russian held side of the dam breach eight people died and almost 6000 were evacuated russian backed official download 2023 06 09t201358.337

The water level remained “at the maximum” at Oleshky and Hola Prystan, which are located next to the Ukrainian-controlled city of Kherson near the mouth of the Dnipro River.

Saldo said that 22,273 dwellings in 17 towns and villages of the Russian-held portion of Kherson had been inundated, and that the water may not stop for another 10 days.

Earlier on Friday, the Kremlin charged Ukrainian soldiers of repeatedly shelling civilian flooding victims, killing one pregnant lady among them.

There was no quick response from Kyiv, which has accused Moscow’s troops of shelling people living on waterlogged territory that it controls, and Reuters was unable to independently verify the claims of bombardment.

Both Russia and Ukraine claim the other blew up the dam.
