Spain: A Majorca restaurant collapses, leaving at least four dead and over twenty wounded

Madrid, Spain, 24 May: A seaside restaurant on the Spanish island of Majorca partially collapsed on Thursday, killing at least four people and injuring over twenty more, according to authorities. It is believed that other diners were still trapped under the debris, as reported by The New York Times.

At least some of the terraces looked to have fallen down to the ground level, as shown by footage from the state-owned network RTVE and pictures from other news sources, and rescue personnel were attempting to extricate the victims from the rubble. About eight o’clock at night (local time), the terraces collapsed, although it was unclear whether any of the surrounding construction collapsed as well.

According to a New York Times investigation, photos obtained before to the tragedy revealed that the restaurant, called Medusa Beach Club, had three stories, with enormous terraces on the middle and top floors that were supported by pillars.

Majorca’s rescue services reported four verified deaths and twenty-one injuries in a post that was posted on X. Later on, however, Spanish media sites said that authorities had raised the toll of injuries to 27. Information about the victims’ nationalities was withheld by officials.

Pedro Sanchez, the prime minister of Spain, said on X that he was keeping a careful eye on the recovery process. Sanchez went on to say that he has sent an offer to municipal and regional leaders of all the resources of the federal government.

The biggest of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, Majorca is a well-liked vacation spot that sees a lot of visitors from northern Europe throughout the year.
