What is the 'enmity' of Pakistan's new army chief Asim Munir with Imran Khan? no 10 big things about him
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan (Ex Pm Imran Khan) had demanded that new general elections should be held in Pakistan soon and the government formed after that should appoint a new army chief. He also advised the current army chief Bajwa to give another service extension. But the current Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif (PM Shehbaz Sharif) rejected this proposal.
Here are 10 big things about Pakistan's new army chief: -
Lieutenant-General Asim Munir (Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir) has been the chief intelligence officer of Pakistan. The Defense Ministry said that Aseem Munir will replace General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who is retiring at the end of this month after a tenure of six years.
According to The Dawn News, Aseem Munir was appointed as the 23rd ISI chief but he could last only for 8 months. At the behest of the then Prime Minister Imran Khan, he was removed from the post and Lieutenant-General Faiz Hameed was made the ISI chief.
It is said that for this reason Lieutenant-General Aseem Munir does not like Imran Khan and he is more close to General Bajwa and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
Lt-Gen Munir's 4-year term as Lt-Gen ends on 27 November and Gen Bajwa is retiring on 29 November. With the permission of the President, Aseem Munir will become the new army chief after General Bajwa steps down.
The appointment of Lt-Gen Munir as army chief comes at a time when former prime minister Imran Khan has been alleging that the army was behind his ouster from power earlier this year.
Imran Khan is demanding early general elections in Pakistan and Imran Khan wanted the names of his choice to be included in the appointment of the new army chief. But Shahbaz Sharif flatly refused it.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif announced to reporters that Munir's appointment as the new army chief was "on his merit, according to the law and the constitution".
Lieutenant-General Asim has played a big role in Pakistan's domestic and international politics. Munir's appointment could affect Pakistan's weak democracy, Pakistan's relations with India, and Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. Along with this, Pakistan's relations with China and America can also be affected.
In Pakistan, the army chief is appointed for three years, but many army chiefs have got service extensions. This list also includes the name of the current Army Chief, General Bajwa, who was appointed to the post in November 2016, but in the year 2019, he was given an extension of service for three years.
Army Chief Bajwa, who is retiring on Wednesday, had said that the army will not have any work in national politics in the future. He rejected Imran Khan's claims as false, in which he told America's hand behind his coup.
