DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE G20 SUMMIT

The Russia-Ukraine War and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to address the “global trust deficit” were two important milestones on Day 1 of the G20.

The New Delhi G20 Summit Leaders’ Declaration, issued under India’s presidency, stated that “today’s era must not be one of war,” urged all States to uphold the rules of international law, including territorial integrity and sovereignty, and called for initiatives to bring about “a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

Through a consenses, the New Delhi Declaration—another significant step—was proclaimed.

Friends, we just received some wonderful news. Thanks to the diligence of our staff and your all-out collaboration, the New Delhi G20 Summit Leaders’ Declaration has garnered broad support.

He sounded the gavel three times, declaring the proclamation to be approved.

In a notable development during India’s G20 leadership, all G20 members agreed to Modi’s request to invite the 55-member African Union (AU) to the high table of the world’s top economies.

According to Modi, the G20 would be strengthened by the African Union joining and by the voice of the Global South. With a population of over 1.4 billion people, the union as a whole has a GDP of almost USD 3 trillion. Since the Asian financial crisis-related founding of the G20 in 1999, this is the group’s first enlargement.
