Media star Ramnath Goenka’s daughter-in-law Saroj Goenka passes away at age 95

Saroj Goenka, the renowned media mogul Ramnath Goenka’s daughter-in-law, died on Friday at her Chennai residence. When the end came at 11.30 am, her youngest daughter Kavita Singhania was at her side. She was 95 years old.

Saroj is the daughter of Shreyans Prasad Jain, who is the name of the Mumbai-based SP Jain College. in 5:30 p.m., she was cremated in the electrical crematorium in Besant Nagar. She will host a condolence gathering at her Express Estate home on Sunday from 2-4 p.m.

Saroj, who was born on August 29, 1929, wed Bhagwan Das Goenka, the son of Ramnath Goenka. Following her husband’s premature death in 1979, she became The Indian Express (Madurai) Ltd.’s managing director, a role she retained until 1995. In 1984–85, she served as the Indian Newspaper Society’s president.

Saroj eventually rose to the position of chairman of Express Infrastructure Ltd, the company that manages Mount Road’s upscale Express Avenue shopping center. Express Avenue was officially opened on August 30, 2010, by M Karunanidhi, the then chief minister. Speaking during the event, Karunanidhi said, “Express Avenue is like a crowning memorial for the services rendered by Ramnath Goenka, the doyen of Indian journalism.”

Saroj, often lovingly known as Amma, was well-known for her altruistic endeavors, including managing the Daya Sadan Childrens Town, an orphanage, in the city of Nerkundram. She spent a considerable amount of time directly supervising Daya Sadan’s operations by going there every Saturday.

In Sowcarpet, Chennai, she oversaw the Moongibai Goenka Girls Higher Secondary School as well. Established in 1949, the school bears her mother-in-law’s name. Three daughters, Arati Agarwal, Ritu Goenka, and Kavita Singhania, survive Saroj.

Longtime friend of Saroj Sudha Ravi expressed her condolences for her passing, recalling that she was a diligent student of Vedanta under Swami Paramarthananda. She claimed to have consistently attended the Swamiji’s lessons and to have finished studying several Upanishads and Vedantic works.

The Gandhigram Khadi and Village Industries Public Charitable Trust has Sudha as a trustee. Saroj, she claimed, was a strong supporter of the Indian Crafts Council. Sudha said, “She was a wonderful human being—very kind, very warm.”
