Bill Granger, an Australian chef, passed away at the age of 54. The BBC reports that Mr. Granger, a thirty-year veteran of the food writing and restaurant industries in Melbourne, is a self-taught celebrity. In a statement, his family claimed that on Christmas Day, Mr. Granger “died peacefully in hospital” in London. According to the BBC article, he was dubbed the “godfather of avocado toast”.

Chefs Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson, as well as celebrities like Hugh Jackman, left tributes in droves.
“He will go down in history as the ‘King of Breakfast,’ elevating simple meals to a unique and joyful experience. Everyone will really miss him,” Mr. Granger’s family said on Instagram.

They kept the reason of his death a secret.

Throughout his career, Mr. Granger created several television culinary series, wrote 14 publications, and launched over a dozen restaurants worldwide.

At the age of 23, he launched his first restaurant in Sydney in 1993. He had left his studies at the art school to launch the company.

According to the site, the café, called Bills, gained notoriety for its avocado toast, ricotta pancakes with honeycomb butter, and excellent coffee.

Celebrities acknowledged Mr. Granger’s ability and the enormous vacuum he left behind in their condolences.

cuisine writer and TV chef Nigella Lawson said on Instagram, “He was the loveliest man, and the joy he gave us – whether through his food, his books, the spaces he made for us or in person – came from the kindness and generosity and sheer, shining exuberance of his very self.”

This is heartbreaking news, and I’m so sorry to hear it. What a beautiful man and peaceful, gentle spirit he was. “When I first met him many moons ago, he couldn’t have been nicer and his food was so good. I admired everything he represented in food,” TV chef Oliver said.

Granger was called a “wonderful man” and a “ray of Aussie sunshine” by Australian singer-actor Jason Donovan.

Following Bills’ success, the chef launched more cafes in London, South Korea, and Japan. One of Australia’s highest accolades, the Medal of the Order of Australia, was bestowed to him in January of this year in recognition of his services to the travel and hospitality industries.
