Customs and Holidays

On Vaishakha Amavasya, devotees prepare sattvik (pure) meals at home and take a cleansing bath to start the day. It is usual to invite Brahmins to the residence and feed them roti or chapati, which is thereafter given to the cows. Offerings of cash, food, and clothing are offered to the Brahmins at Pitru Tarpan. Touching the feet of the Brahmins is another custom of asking for blessings. Furthermore, arranging Pitru Gayatri is said to lessen Pitru Dosha, and doing a hawna or yajna is seen as auspicious.

Importance of Amavasya Vaishakha

Vaishakha Amavasya is a significant day since it is a day to commemorate and remember our ancestors. Pitru Tarpan, Pind Daan, and Pitru Puja are among the practices that are said to bring wealth and harmony to the family. During this season, it is also considered auspicious to worship the peepal tree. It is not advisable to have housewarmings, weddings, engagements, or other happy gatherings on this day.
