Golden hour

On the first day of Medam month in the Malayalam calendar, Vishu is a traditional cultural celebration celebrated with prayers, a delicious sadya, and meaningful family time. The highlight of the day is Vishukani. “That which is seen first” is what Kani signifies.

It is a long-held notion that if one looks at happy, auspicious things first thing on Vishu, the year will be better. This “sight” is prepared by Malayalis on the eve of the celebration.

Typically, it consists of cash, silver goods, silk clothing, mirrors, kani konna (Indian laburnum), and field crops. Kainetham is yet another highlight. Children get pocket money from the family’s elders on this day. For Malayalis, the holiday also signifies the start of a new year custom.
