13,700 crore defense purchases approved for Army, more than 118 Arjun tanks-3000 armored vehicles to be taken
The Defense Acquisition Council under the chairmanship of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday approved capital acquisition proposals for various weapons and equipment, including 118 Arjun tanks, more than 3000 armored vehicles. The Defense Ministry said that in total, the acceptance of three requirements of Rs 13,700 crore (Acceptance of Necessity-AON) has been accepted. All these acceptances of necessity are in the highest priority category of defense acquisition.
Defense Ministry officials said that while Rs 8,380 crore will be spent on new tanks, more than 3000 armored vehicles will cost Rs 5,300 crore. All these acquisition proposals will be indigenously designed, developed and manufactured. These will include inter-aliased platforms and systems designed and developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
The commitment being made about defense equipment manufactured in India is an important step towards self-reliant India. The DAC has also approved that all capital purchase contracts, except D&D (designed and developed) cases, be completed in two years. Experts said that new tanks and armored vehicles will increase the fighting capability of the army.
The new upgraded Arjun tank has a transmission system with new technology. This makes the Arjun tank easily find its target. Arjun Tank is able to move easily while avoiding the mines laid in the battlefield. This advance tank also has special sensors to avoid chemical attack.
On the other hand, Bharat Forge said on Tuesday that it has received a contract worth Rs 177.95 crore from the Ministry of Defense for the supply of Kalyani M4 vehicles. The company said that it has received this contract for protected vehicles under the Emergency Purchase Program of the Indian Army. The Pune-based company entered into an agreement on Monday with global aerospace and technology company Paramount Group to manufacture armored vehicles in the country. Kalyani M4 is a multi-role platform that can meet the specific needs of military forces in any type of area.
