17 people have died in the Ghatkopar hoarding collapse incident

With the death of a man at a municipal hospital here on Wednesday, the number of fatalities from the hoarding collapse event that happened in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar region on May 13 has increased to 17, authorities said.

Raju Sonawane, 52, passed away on May 19 while receiving treatment at the KEM Hospital. He had been hurt when the hoarding fell on a gas station in the Chheda Nagar area due to strong winds and unusual rainfall, according to a city official.

16 people, including a former general manager of air traffic control (ATC) and his spouse, had already been pronounced dead by the authorities.

Seventy-five others had also been hurt when the enormous 120-by-120-foot hoarding collapsed.

According to the source, the wounded who required neurosurgery were sent to the KEM hospital a day after the event.

The director of the advertising company that had put up the hoarding, Bhavesh Bhinde, was subsequently taken into custody in Udaipur, Rajasthan. He has been placed under police arrest until May 26 by a local court.
