350 stopped in Darcha due to blocked Leh highway

More than 350 drivers, helpers, and other people were stranded near Darcha in Lahaul and Spiti district today as the Manali-Leh highway beyond Darcha was still blocked due to heavy snowfall near Baralacha La. Up to 200 trucks and other heavy vehicles carrying various materials to Leh from the Manali side.

Around 200 trucks and heavy vehicles were detained at the Darcha police checkpoint, leaving more than 350 drivers, attendants, and other individuals trapped, according to Rahul Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, Lahaul and Spiti.

According to him, snowfall has blocked the Manali-Leh highway beyond Darcha, and the BRO has not yet made it passable for large trucks. He said that the drivers arrived close to Darcha without the district administration’s consent.

“If weather conditions stay favorable, this route will be restored by May 20,” Rahul said. Trucks and other large vehicles should thus not go to Leh before Manali.

He claimed that large trucks were still unable to pass through the roadway that leads from Baralacha La to Killing Sarai. He also said that the district administration would only let the passage of big trucks on alternate days once Army vehicles had passed through.
