A day after Ponmudy’s SC rap, Ravi reappoints him as a minister for Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu governor RN Ravi administered the oath to K Ponmudy, the MLA for Tirukkoilur, at a function held at Raj Bhavan on Friday, one day after the Supreme Court set a 24-hour deadline for his re-induction into the council of ministers.

Even as a two-judge panel on March 11 delayed the minister’s conviction and sentencing, the Tamil Nadu government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court contesting Ravi’s refusal to re-induct Ponmudy.

On Thursday, a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud chastised Ravi for declining to take the oath.
Ponmudy’s reappointment to the council of ministers was suggested by Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin, according to a news statement issued by Raj Bhavan earlier in the day. The announcement also said that the Governor had accepted the suggestion.
Stalin said on X, “On behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu, I thank the Hon’ble Supreme Court, the custodian of the Constitution, for its timely intervention, upholding the spirit of the Constitution and saving democracy.”
Ponmudy said he would always be CM Stalin’s devoted disciple and claimed that he received relief as a result of the legal actions done by ‘thalapathy’.
