When he attacked officers with a machete on Wednesday night when evidence was being gathered at Kappiyampuliyur in Villupuram, one of the accused who was apprehended for robbing a couple on February 23 near Olakkur was wounded in the leg by police.

On Wednesday, the suspect, C Udhayaprakash, 25, of Indra Nagar, Tirunelveli, and his accomplice, 17, were taken into custody.

S Pavitra (20) from Thrissur, Kerala, who works at a textile store in Chennai, and her boyfriend P Ramesh (21) were riding a bike when the accused obstructed their way close to Olakkur, according to police. They mistreated Pavitra and stole Ramesh’s phone. Pavitra attempted to escape their assault but was instantly killed when she was hit by a speeding automobile.

On February 25, Olakkur police began an inquiry and detained the 45-year-old driver, Baskar.

They identified the thieves as C Udhayaprakash, 25, of Indra Nagar, Tirunelveli, and his accomplice, 17, after examining CCTV video and cellphone signals. The bike used in the heist was confiscated, and they were taken into custody.

However, Udhayaprakash attacked special sub inspector Ayyappan and head constable Deeban Kumar with a machete that was concealed in the area while collecting evidence close to the lake bund at Kappiyampuliyur. Sub Inspector Mahalingam shot Udhayaprakash in the leg after telling him to surrender with a gunshot. The culprit and the wounded cops were taken to Mundiyampakkam General Medical Center.

An inquiry has been launched and a case has been filed. According to police sources, Udhayaprakash has a criminal past that includes murder cases that occurred within the Radhapuram station boundaries in Tirunelveli.

Udhayaprakash attacked special SI Ayyappan and head constable Deeban Kumar with a knife while collecting evidence close to the lake bund. After threatening Udhayaprakash with a shot, SI Mahalingam shot him in the leg and urged him to surrender.
