After the HC suspended the sitting MP's conviction and sentence, the EC postponed the Lakshadweep Lok Sabha election

The Kerala High Court delayed the conviction and sentencing of incumbent MP Mohammed Faizal in an attempt-to-murder case, which led the Election Commission to postpone the Lakshadweep Lok Sabha byelection on Monday.

The byelection was just declared by the election commission, and it was scheduled for February 27.

Following Faizal's disqualification due to his conviction by a sessions court in Kavaratti, a by-election was declared.

He had filed a petition with the supreme court to challenge the decision suspending his conviction and sentence.

According to a statement from the Election Commission of India, "the Election Commission of India has decided to withhold the bye election and to defer the issuance of notification for holding the bye election" after carefully considering the situation and paying attention to the order made by the Hon'ble High Court of Kerala at Ernakulam.
