As mobs surround and attack jawans, concerns grow about stone-pelting in unstable Manipur, many people are hurt

In the conflict-torn Manipur, crowds have started surrounding security officers and assaulting them, inflicting casualties. These instances have raised concerns.

At Singjamei Chowk in Imphal West on July 17, over 1,000 people engaged in combat with authorities. Even after being asked to disperse by local police officers, the protesting crowd blocked one side of the street.

After some time passed, a sizable crowd of around 3,000 people assembled at the location and assaulted the forces by throwing stones at them, according to an official message of a central force. The letter further said that almost all jawans sustained injuries.

In another instance, supply trucks were ambushed by a crowd, who also hurt the drivers. Similar to this, when requested to step aside, a crowd assaulted security agents. When the jawans replied, the demonstrators began throwing stones at them. 12 people were hurt, including 12 jawans, and one person was murdered.

A top officer in charge of upholding law and order claims that stone pelting has resulted in more injuries to jawans than any other factor.

In a few areas, where crowds are throwing stones at the military, there is an increase in stone pelting. Most of the time, 2,000 to 4,000 individuals throw stones at the opposing soldiers from all sides. It is taking place everywhere. In actuality, more jawans have suffered injuries from stone pelting than from any other cause, according to a top official from the Manipur government, who spoke to News18.

Manipur’s condition is still tumultuous. Violence in the state has ruined the first few days of Parliament’s monsoon session, particularly after a video of a crowd exposing two women to the public went viral.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court also voiced its great worry on the popular video, with Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud urging the administration to act right now.

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) criticized the occurrence as wholly inappropriate and called the use of women to incite racial tensions the worst possible constitutional violation. He also voiced the court’s deep concern about the appearance of such films.

The Supreme Court emphasized that it would step in if the administration failed to act. It further emphasized the need of the government intervening and taking prompt action.
