Ahmedabad. Five former Congress MLAs from Gujarat joined the BJP on Saturday. Eight Congress MLAs resigned before the Rajya Sabha elections and five of them joined BJP today. Jeetu Chaudhary, Pradyum Singh Jadeja, JV Kakadia, Akshay Patel and Brijesh Merja joined the BJP in the presence of state BJP president Jitu Vaghani and other senior leaders. Patel, Merja and Chaudhary resigned a few days after the Election Commission announced the new date of Rajya Sabha election on June 19.
Jadeja and Kakadia resigned from the Assembly membership in March. The Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat was scheduled to take place on March 26 but was postponed due to the lockdown imposed across the country in the wake of the corona virus epidemic. Welcoming these former MLAs to the party, Vaghani said that their presence will strengthen the party at the local level. He also expressed confidence that the BJP will be able to win its victory in the by-elections in the assembly seats vacated by the resignation of all these MLAs. He said that due to internal factionalism of the Congress and weak leadership at the state and national level, these MLAs decided to leave the Congress. He said, "This is not the first time. Even before this, Congress MLAs have joined BJP on many occasions. Despite this constantly happening,
He said, "Congress lacks leadership and factionalism. The Congress itself is responsible for the resignation of the legislators. ”Three other MLAs who resigned from the Congress in March last include Soma Patel, Praveen Maru and Mangal Gavit. Vaghani said that if these three former MLAs also join BJP then the party will welcome them. The Congress won 77 seats in the 2017 Gujarat assembly elections. Now the number of Congress members in the Legislative Assembly has come down to 65. In the last few years, 12 Congress MLAs have left the party. Most of these MLAs have joined BJP.
