Floods in Delhi: Special needs school children are safely evacuated

Approximately 100 blind pupils had to be rescued from the grounds of a Delhi government-run school for the blind in north Delhi’s Kingsway Camp on Friday due to flooding. The school is situated on Banda Bahadur Marg, which links the Outer Ring Road with the GTB Nagar Metro station.

At least two staff members reported that water had gathered close to waist-deep on campus and was over knee-deep at the main entrance of the school building.

“I’m afraid. According to reports, the university was inundated. Thank God, I was carried out with the other pupils,” a student who asked to remain anonymous stated.

A staff member said that due to an unexpected water fill-up on campus, they had to immediately evacuate the pupils. “Recovery attempts were being carried out by school workers, including police officers. A staff member said that “all students were safely removed from the school” and that “police assistance was sought as soon as they noticed flooding.”

Later, according to an official, the children were transported in two buses to another institution in Mundka.

A representative who was travelling about with a list of pupils being relocated from Kingsway Camp stated, “Many students were taken away by their parents, and the remaining nearly 100 were shifted to a facility in Mundka.”

Senior government authorities declined to acknowledge how many pupils were enrolled at the institution overall. When questioned about the rescue, District Magistrate (North) R Menaka did not answer.
