In Fatehgarh Sahib, farmers march with tractors

District farmers protested today by putting their tractors on GT Road in Sirhind and holding signs critical of the Union Government. The district presidents of Bhupinder Singh Jallahand and Harnek Singh Bhallamajra of the Krantikari Kisan Union, BKU (Rajewal), and BKU (Kadian), According to Satbir Singh, the Union Government has abandoned its commitments made more than two years ago. They claimed that by putting the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) regulations into effect, the government was trying to eradicate the farmers.

According to the farmers, the Centre is importing pulses and other food goods in accordance with WTO norms, but it is not yet prepared to provide MSP to Indian farmers. They said that agricultural debt would only increase if the nation were to exit the WTO.

Mohali: To protest the Central Government’s attendance at today’s WTO conference in Doha, members of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) organized a tractor march across the district today. They demanded that the agricultural sector be removed from the WTO agreement since it “advocates the removal of subsidies on fertilizers and pesticides” while parking their tractors beside roads without hindering traffic.
