In Telangana, teachers on poll duty were “caned” for asking for equal pay

Teachers who were on poll duty at a voting place in Narayankhed were reportedly caned by police officers for asking for pay that was set by the government.

Telangana State United Teachers Federation (TSUTF) president K Jangaiah and general secretary Chava Ravi claim that in accordance with government order No. 61 from May 11, teachers have been demanding standard compensation of Rs 600 per day for POs and RS 400 per day for APOs.

In light of this, the authorities gave POs and APOs in the Medak Lok Sabha segment’s Narsapur, Siddipet, Gajwel, and Medak Assembly constituencies Rs 3,150. But in Narayankhed, POs and APOs received Rs 2,400. The police in Narayankhed are said to have caned the instructors when they requested Rs 3,150.

Chava Ravi said that additional teachers were hurt, along with TSUTF state treasurer T Lakshmareddy.

He said that, on the RDO’s instructions, the police arbitrarily lathi-charged the teachers for raising concerns about the cause for the disparity in compensation paid to members of the same Lok Sabha constituency.

K Jangaiah, the general secretary of the Telangana state UTF, and Chava Ravi called for action against the police and RDO.
