‘Inventors’ Fight For Bragging Rights In Delhi High Court Regarding Butter Chicken

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court’s hallways are the scene of a culinary contest between the creators of the world-famous Indian delicacies, Dal Makhani and Butter Chicken. The eateries Moti Mahal and Daryaganj are embroiled in a legal battle at the moment about the use of the slogan “Inventors of Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani.”

Moti Mahal has filed a lawsuit against the Daryaganj restaurant’s proprietors, claiming that they are deceiving the public by implying a link between the two businesses.

The action claims that Daryaganj is fraudulently establishing a connection with Moti Mahal, whose initial branch was formed in Daryaganj, according to the Bar and Bench.

The proprietors of the eatery in Daryaganj have been directed by Justice Sanjeev Narula, who is hearing the matter, to provide a written answer within a month.

For many years, both restaurant companies have maintained that they are the creators of Dal Makhani and Butter Chicken.

Due to the culinary prowess of its founder Kundal Lal Gujral, Moti Mahal claims that these dishes have come to represent Indian cuisine on a worldwide scale.

According to the eatery, Mr. Gujral was worried that his unsold tandoori chicken might dry up. According to Moti Mahal, he invented butter chicken when he came up with a sauce to rehydrate the chicken.

Daryaganj, however, disputes the case as “baseless” and asserts that Kundal Lal Jaggi invented the recipes.

According to Bar and Bench, the attorney for Daryaganj said that the first Moti Mahal restaurant was a cooperative enterprise between the forerunners of both parties—Gujral of Moti Mahal and Jaggi of Daryaganj—in Peshawar, Pakistan.

There will be a heated dispute about who is the “inventor of butter chicken and dal makhani” until the court takes up the case again on May 29.
