Iran-flagged fishing vessel saved in the Arabian Sea by Indian Navy’s INS Sumitra during the 2nd Anti-Piracy Operation

The Indian Navy’s cruiser INS Sumitra successfully rescued 19 crew members from armed Somalian pirates in yet another daring operation in the Arabian Sea. The fishing vessel Al Naeemi was flying the Iranian flag.

Up to eleven Somalian pirates made an attempt to take over the fishing boat carrying a Pakistani crew.

Just yesterday, 700 nautical miles west of Kochi in the Arabian Sea, the Indian destroyer INS Sumitra rescued 17 crew members from another fishing vessel flying the Iranian flag, the MV Iman, which was taken over by Somalian pirates.

Indian Defense sources said that the ALH Dhruv helicopters on the Indian Navy cruiser had surrounded the seized ship in order to alert the pirates who had taken it over.

After successfully rescuing everyone on board the fishing trawler, INS Sumitra disarmed the pirates and ordered them to go for Somalia.

On January 28, the Navy sent its missile destroyer INS Visakhapatnam into the Gulf of Aden to help put out a fire aboard a ship flying the flag of the Marshall Islands that had 22 Indian crew members on board.
