Karnataka: BJP MLAs Demand Arrest of Those Who Raised “Pakistan Zindabad” Slogans and Chant “Jai Shri Ram” in Assembly

In response to the purported “Pakistan Zindabad” sloganeering controversy in the Karnataka Assembly, BJP MLAs protested in the Vidhana Soudha on Thursday morning, calling for action to be taken. In the state assembly, BJP MLAs also sang “Jai Sri Ram,” to which Chief Minister Siddaramaiah retorted with “Jai Sita Ram.”

Two days ago, a video went viral online, purporting to show Congress supporters cheering “Pakistan zindabad” at the Karnataka assembly to mark the victory of their party’s nominee, Syed Naseer Hussain, in the Rajya Sabha elections. The Congress, however, refuted the accusations, claiming that supporters were yelling “Naseer saab zindabad” and applauding Syed Naseer Hussain.

On Thursday morning, the BJP MLAs severely criticized the Congress administration in power for not apprehending Syed Naseer Hussain’s followers who were purportedly heard singing pro-Pakistan chants inside the parliamentary building.

The BJP MLAs reportedly yelled in the state Assembly, “Down down government,” “We want justice, arrest the culprit,” and “Spineless government is not capable to take action.” The Hindustan Times reported that this was happening.

R Ashoka, the Karnataka Assembly’s Leader of Opposition (LoP), demanded that anybody heard chanting pro-Pakistani chants be taken into custody.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah responded to the BJP’s objection by saying that the government has sent the audio tape to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and that, upon receipt of the report, appropriate action would be taken.

“The government is committed, as I have previously said; once the report is out, nobody will be spared. We’ve handed it over to FSL. We’ll act as soon as the report is received,” he said.

However, in relation to the case, the Byadagi Police said on Thursday that they had detained Muhammad Shafi Nashipudi, a businessman and follower of Syed Naseer Hussain.

“Mohmad Shafi Nashipudi, a merchant and Syed Naseer Hussain’s ally, was arrested by Byadagi town. His voice sample was taken by the police, who then brought him to examine the voice in the purportedly pro-Pakistani chant video. According to a Hindustan Times article, police alleged that he was present in Vidhana Soudha alongside Syed Nasser Hussain during the celebration after the Rajya Sabha election victory.
