Kerala: A grandmother and a woman perish in the Kothayar River

At Randarkara Parakkadavu, close to Muvattupuzha, a mother and her granddaughter perished in the Kothayar River on Friday. Another grandchild who was involved in the accident is in serious condition at a private hospital in Aluva.

While washing clothes and taking a bath along the riverbed, Amina, 63, the wife of Moosa of Kizhekkakudyil House, and her granddaughters Farha Fathima, 14, a daughter of Shiyas, and Hana, 10, a daughter of Riyas, are said to have been entangled in an undercurrent.

The event happened at 11 a.m., according to Abdul Khader Ajimon, a councillor for the Randarkara ward of the Muvattupuzha municipality. Hana, Farha, and Amina were all proficient swimmers. They bathed in the river and cleaned clothing on a regular basis. There were reports of Amina struggling in the water at about 11 a.m. They started a search in the river and informed other neighbors. It was Amina who was saved before they found Hana. Officials from the fire and rescue services had already arrived by then. Farha was located after more investigation was carried out because to concerns about a third victim, he added.

Around 11.30 p.m., Amina was pronounced dead at a private hospital in Muvattupuzha after the three of them were taken there. After being sent to another private hospital in Aluva, Farha passed away there with Hana. Hana is still on a ventilator and in severe condition.

Police in Muvattupuzha have started an investigation into an unnatural death complaint that they recorded.

Even in times of flooding, Amina enjoyed swimming in the river. But there were severe undercurrents in the section where she and Farha drowned. The deceased came from a low-income background. Hana’s father Riyas drives, while Farha’s father Shiyas is employed by a private company. We are shocked by the occurrence,” Ajimon said.
