Kochi Water Metro: CM Opens Four New Terminals to Improve Connectivity Between the Island and the Mainland

On Thursday, Kochi Water Metro’s four additional terminals were officially opened by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarai Vijayan.

Mulavukad North, South Chittoor, Eloor, and Cheranellur are the terminals.

During the videoconference, Vijayan said that the new Water Metro stations will help around one lakh people. The most crucial thing to accomplish here, he added, is to provide the residents of the islands linked to the city with efficient transit options, as Kochi is Kerala’s commercial hub.

“We have taken our promise really seriously. This service will help a greater number of individuals. Other states are contacting us for cutting-edge Water Metro boats because the adage “What Kerala thinks today, India thinks tomorrow” is starting to come true, Vijayan continued.

According to him, the Left government has created several development projects, such as the GAIL pipeline, LNG terminal, city gas project, power highway, national waterway project, and high-range highway, with the belief that basic infrastructure should benefit society as a whole.

“The new terminals in Kochi will enhance communication between the islands and the mainland. There are now thirteen air-conditioned water metro boats that transport passengers between the terminals at High Court Junction, Vypin, Bolgatty, Vyttila, and Kakkanad. The chief minister said that the Fort Kochi route will shortly begin.

Launched in April 2023, the Water Metro project is a socially inclusive transportation alternative that spans 78 kilometers and connects 10 islands. It is the first of its kind in the nation.

The ships’ panoramic windows provide a breathtaking view of Kochi’s picturesque backwaters, and they will transport city dwellers around 15 suggested waterways. When fully operational, the Left Front government’s showpiece Water Metro project, built in the port city at a cost of Rs 1,136.83 crore, would use 38 ports and 78 electric boats to link the 10 islands.

The German financing organization KfW and the Keralan government both provide full support for the Kochi Water Metro service.
