Like his father Deve Gowda, Kumaraswamy rises from defeat like a phoenix

Due to its poor election showing in the previous year, JD(S) lost a significant portion of its voter base. And shortly before the Lok Sabha elections, an ugly sex scandal involving Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of HD Deve Gowda, embarrassed the elderly politician and Kumaraswamy. But the Gowda clan and JD(S) disproved everyone. Not only has JD(S) recovered, but its state president, HD Kumaraswamy, is now a Cabinet Minister in Modi’s newly formed administration, with a major responsibility for the ministry of steel and heavy industries.

HD Whether it was his first Lok Sabha victory in 1996 from the Kanakapura seat or his most recent victory from the Mandya Lok Sabha seat, Kumaraswamy’s political career has always been like swimming against the flow. It is said of him that, like his father, Deve Gowda, he emerges from defeat like a phoenix. With so few, the Gowda family has become powerful. Those who are least concerned about election failures are Kumaraswamy and Deve Gowda. Party employees respected Gowda for his demeanor. The family is fortunate, and many believe that supernatural intervention is the reason for the family’s success in keeping the celebration going.

After suffering crushing defeats in the 1989 assembly elections in the Kanakpura and Holenarasipura seats, Gowda bounced back to become the Chief Minister five years later and the Prime Minister in 1996 with a meagre 16 MPs. After Gowda’s JD(S) won a majority in 1994, Gowda was appointed chief minister. JD (S), which had just 10 seats in 1999, gained 58 seats in 2004, assisting HD Kumaraswamy in becoming the chief minister of a coalition government consisting of the BJP and JD (S). In spite of the JD(S) gaining just 38 seats, Kumaraswamy was re-elected as chief minister in 2018. Even though his party only has two MPs, Kumaraswamy has become a Union Minister. Following his appointment to the Modi Cabinet, Kumaraswamy told the media, “It is important to me to work for the welfare of Karnataka and the entire country.” As a Union Minister, I want to live up to the aspirations of the people of Karnataka.
