Loot from the Tigiria ATM cash van: seven were detained with Rs 64.45L

A group of thieves who allegedly stole an astounding Rs 1.67 crore from an ATM cash truck three months ago are said to have been nabbed by rural police, who arrested seven people here on Tuesday, including the ringleader. The event happened within the Tigiria police boundaries on the Nuasadak-Godijharia route.

Cuttack SP (Rural) Mihir Kumar Panda briefed the reporters, stating that the accused was allegedly assisted in supplying vital information on the van’s itinerary by the driver of the cash-carrying van and another individual who was involved with another vehicle. He answered, “They’re at large.”

On November 10 of last year, after learning of the theft, the primary suspect, Kalim Khan, also known as Sukuta (29), confronted the other thieves for the cash. On that particular day, the driver and four employees of Secure Value Cash Management were transporting Rs 1.67 crore in cash in the van, which was intended to be deposited into several SBI ATMs.

Around 2:00 pm, a group of seven to eight masked criminals with two motorcycles and a Scorpio started following the automobile on Nuasadak-Kalaragada route. They were armed with guns and other weapons. At gunpoint, the accused grabbed the cash-filled trunk from the vehicle and routed it to a remote location next to an abandoned rice mill, according to Panda.

Information indicates that both the driver and the other individual had suffered significant financial losses from online gambling. To make up for the loss, they helped the crooks carry out the crime. The pair had told the gang that there was no chain fastened to the cash trunk and that the car’s CCTV was broken.

Some followed the car, while others monitored the movements of the cops as they went. Panda revealed that the accused had made two prior attempts to plunder the vehicle but had failed because of scheduling conflicts and other problems.

“We have taken seven of them into custody and taken from them money worth Rs 64.45 lakh, three knives, one pistol, and a two-wheeler.” The car that was utilized to steal the goods has been disassembled and dumped in a canal. He said, “An investigation is in progress and there will probably be more arrests made in this regard.”
