Low Visibility Impacts Air Quality During Delhi’s Republic Day Parade in 2024

The data from the Central Pollution Control Board indicates that on Thursday, the 24-hour average AQI was 332, which is classified as “severe.”

Due to dense fog, visibility is limited to 400 meters till 8:30 AM. However, the weather prediction indicates that by 10:30 AM, visibility levels should reach 1,500 meters.

According to the Indian Railways, fog in certain areas of northern India caused delays for 24 trains headed for Delhi on [date].

Why Does New Delhi’s Air Quality Drop?

The lack of active western disturbances (WD), which normally bring rain to northwest India, is the cause of the persistent fog that has been present on the plains since December 25.

Strong WD activity has been lacking this winter, in part because to El Nino circumstances that are producing anomalous warming in the Pacific Ocean. This interferes with low-level winds, moisture, and nocturnal cooling, all of which are necessary for the production of fog. Despite the fact that there have been two WDs, their effects have only reached a few states.

Therefore, it is essential to take care during Republic Day events since poor visibility is anticipated.
