Manipur Unrest: Militants Shoot and Kill a Police Officer in Moreh, Tengnoupal District

Tuesday in the Tengnoupal district of Manipur, a police officer was shot and killed by suspected tribal insurgents, according to police sources. Officials said that as police were examining the recently built helipad at Eastern Ground in the border town occupied by the Kuki-Zo tribe, the gang of rebels opened fire on them, injuring Moreh SDPO Chingtham Anand with a bullet.

After being brought to a main health facility in Moreh, the SDPO passed away, according to the police officer. He claimed that an effort to capture the terrorists has been started in the region.

Manipur CM Shows Pain
N Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur, expressed his sadness at the “cold-blooded killing” of Anand. Singh posted on X, the previous Twitter platform, saying, “Deeply saddened by the cold-blooded killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand, OC Moreh Police this morning.” “His commitment to protecting and serving the populace will never be forgotten. The offenders will face consequences.

The event occurred a few weeks after a number of civil society organizations, mostly from Moreh, called for the evacuation of state troops from the border town.

Over ten Myanmar nationals have been detained by the Manipur Police in recent days on charges of breaking into Indian territory unlawfully and stealing furniture and other household things from Meitei residents who have abandoned their homes.

Since May 3, when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was held in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s quest for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, more than 180 people have died throughout the state as a result of ethnic violence.

Meiteis make up around 53% of the population of Manipur and are mostly found in the Imphal Valley, while tribal people, such as the Nagas and Kukis, make up 40% of the population and are primarily found in the hill regions.
