Nadda leaves HP’s RS seat, but is expected to retain the Gujarat one

JP Nadda, the national president of the BJP, has resigned from the Rajya Sabha, where he was the representative for Himachal Pradesh. The Rajya Sabha accepted his resignation, which took effect on March 4. Nadda’s term as the Himachal Pradesh representative in the Rajya Sabha, which was scheduled to expire on April 2, has terminated early.

Recently, he was elected from Gujarat to the Upper House of Parliament without facing any opposition, winning a six-year term. According to BJP sources, Nadda’s resignation was required in order to enable his legislative swearing-in as a member of the Rajya Sabha representing Gujarat. Retaining his Gujarat seat required his official resignation.

A member of the Rajya Sabha is not allowed to serve in the Upper House as the representative of two states at the same time.

A BJP spokesperson said, “His resignation from the Himachal Pradesh seat was obligatory to represent Gujarat.” Nadda was the uncontested RS member from Gujarat, succeeding Purushottam Rupala. Rupala is presently running for the LS seat in Rajkot. Nadda, who has been the BJP’s national president since 2020, was granted an extension at the national conference. Nadda, who was close to PM Modi, served as health minister in Modi’s first administration from 2014 to 2019.

In addition, he served as the state’s minister of the forest environment, research, and technology from 1993 to 2003 and as an MLA for Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh from 2007 to 2012.
