Police arrested Congress leader, Priyanka said - can stop other parties from raising voice, not us

Lucknow. Shahnawaz Alam, president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Minority Department, has been arrested in December last year for his involvement in the violent protests against the CAA and NRC in Lucknow . The Congress termed it as an act of political vendetta and warned of a protest against the arrest. Party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has condemned the incident by tweeting. Police sources said that Alam was arrested in Hazratganj area late Monday on 19 December last year in connection with the violent protests against CAA and NRC in the capital Lucknow. He said that it has been learned that Alam was present near the spot during this violent demonstration.

After Alam's arrest, several leaders including state Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu and party Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra reached Hazratganj Kotwali and spoke to the officials. Meanwhile, a large number of party workers gathered at the Kotwali campus and raised slogans. Police used sticks to disperse them. In this, many activists were injured, including party youth wing general secretary Shivam Tripathi. Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has described the police action as oppressive and undemocratic. He tweeted on Tuesday, See how the Uttar Pradesh Police picked up the chairman of our Minority Department in the dark of night. First, our state president was kept in jail for four weeks on fake charges. This police action is repressive and undemocratic. The Congress General Secretary said that Congress leaders and activists are committed to raising their voice on public issues.

The BJP government can stop other parties from raising their voice, not our party, by making Uttar Pradesh police an instrument of repression. The soldiers of the Congress are not afraid of police sticks and fake cases. Meanwhile, the state president of the party, Ajay Kumar Lallu, said that the party would launch an agitation against Alam's arrest. If it is wrong to raise voice against undemocratic steps, the Congress will do so a thousand times. He said that the government was acting in a political vendetta. He said that the way the police suddenly arrested Alam from his house without giving any notice, is highly condemnable.
